Since retiring from coaching and starting my new position as Grief Counselor at a pet cemetery (yes, you read right!) , I am surrounded by more love than I ever saw in the soul mate business.

There’s nothing like the love of a dog.

The devotion of the pet owners who take the time, effort and expense to see that their beloved pets are given a proper send off is heartwarming and, to tell you the truth, more than a little humbling.

You see, during all the years I coached singles and tried to communicate how to attract true love, I could never accomplish what I hoped for. Yes, there are a couple of marriages, a few children and a small share of happily ever afters out there, and I am happy for those folks.

 But the sad reality is that most of the beautiful people who read this column are still single, despite their efforts to find love.

A man with a dog is still a chick magnet.

What I see now in my daily work with grieving pet owners is a love so pure, so priceless and at the same time heart wrenching.  It  is teaching me what unconditional love is all about. Every single mourning pet parent nods in tearful agreement when I mention these facts about the love of a pet:

1. Pets are never disappointed in you.

2. Pets are always happy when you come home and show their excitement.

3. Pets never resent you for your mistakes.

4. Pets never talk smack about you.

5. Pets live completely in the moment and invite you to live there too.

6. Pets don’t break promises.

7. Pets never hold a grudge against you.

8. Pets are good for your health. Petting animals lowers your blood pressure and stimulates calming brain chemicals that bring peace and relaxation.

9. Pets “read your mind” by paying attention to your moods. Ever notice when you are sad that your pet picks up on it?

10. Pets are with you every single day. Your human family and friends don’t see you every day…no matter how stress free your relationships.

A truer friend cannot be found.

A friend of mine once kidded that her beloved horse, Jack, was probably her soul mate. She is a super youthful 50 something and never married was only half kidding. Can an animal be a soul mate?

Oh, BTW, I became ordained as a minister back in the day when one of my clients asked if I would officiate at her wedding (should that day come).

While I have yet to do a wedding, I am now conducting precious pet memorial services and funerals.  It is deeply soul satisfying to help these loving and grieving pet moms and dads say goodbye to their furry and feathery children. Life sure has some crazy twists and turns, right?

One of the parts of my job that I love is running The Hug Club at San Diego Pet Memorial Park. It is our open Pet Loss Recovery Group. We meet every Saturday. We also have a special facebook page for sharing hope, healing and recovery ideas.

One last note.  I adopted a dog myself this summer.  As luck or fate would have it, I brought her home three weeks before my mom died this summer.  Wise ones say that the right animal comes into your life at the right time.

When the student is ready, the teacher appears.

 She unexpectedly came in the form of Catherine in the summer of ’09. I was yet in middle of being involved with emotionally unavailable people, again and again, feeling completely fed up with the same old tired scenario.

I had been immersing myself in the world of self-improvement and life coaching, as well as the Law of Attraction. I had previously never heard of love coaching (let alone a soulmate mastermind group!), so when I saw a random banner to Cat’s site, I was immediately intrigued.

I didn’t really quite understand the concept of soulmates. My life pretty much dictated that I’d most likely die a spinster—or so I believed at the time. If I could write a guidebook called How To Be Romantically Hopeless In 90 Days Flat (And Stay That Way FOR LIFE!) For Dummies, it would be an instant bestseller!

Backed by my extensive experience in unrequited crushes, abandonment, rejection, non-mutual attraction (and oh, not to mention people who only wanted that particular one thing from me and nothing else!), I became a seasoned pro at love sabotage.

It all gradually changed as soon as I began working with Cat. I attracted and aligned with more people and resources that directed me closer to the prize—my true love. Frankly, it was a quite hellaciously bumpy road, but even when I felt like I was at the end of my rope, I kept on affirming that the person had already been born, alive, breathing, and walking the earth, looking for me—wherever he was, whoever he was.

It still looked like nothing was happening at all, at least in the physical realm. Just when I was dealt yet another huge blow, the universe gave me a pretty nice and swift smack on the cheek to get me to pay attention. I then realized that the person I had been looking for DID indeed exist! He had been right under my nose (albeit halfway across the country) the whole time!

It turned out to be a good friend I had known for 2 1/2 years. He had been searching long and hard for someone like me all along! I somehow failed (or refused?) to recognize him as “the one” because he didn’t look the part, at least in form, but he is 150% of the essence of what I’ve always desired in a relationship!

I went from being nearly dateless to having a soulmate, life companion, and best friend who desires all of me—body, mind, and spirit! Quite a quantum leap, eh? (For the record, we both intend to get married one day. At the moment, we are working on allowing the right resources and circumstances to manifest.)

The Soulmate Secret Chapter 2: Readiness

“I won’t take that off my list.”

“I am sure I know what is right for me.”

“I want to be with an attractive man.”

“I don’t want to marry an old, fat, bald guy.” (Apologies to all the mature, teddy bear guys with sexy shiny heads out there.)

Ladies I have only one question for you.

Are you sure?

Are you absolutely sure you know what your guy needs to look like?

Whenever I remind my students that many newly coupled women say “He wasn’t my type,” some get annoyed with me.  I don’t know how my adorable seeking soul mates hear “You’re going to have to settle and marry a toad” when they hear me say that, but they do.

Nothing pisses my seeking soul mates off faster than the idea that they can’t have a man who is attractive.  But, have you ever thought, attractive to who? Is it important that other people, women in particular see him as attractive? Think about that for a minute.

Who is the judge of attractive enough?  How do you decide?  Isn’t it most important that YOU think he is hot?

Let’s face it, you decided what was hot and what was not a long time ago.  Even in the early grades, some children simply have more charisma than others. Some people attract a lot of attention in every group.

When preteens experience this flow of attention to the popular kids, they begin to adjust themselves to either be in that circle or act like the ones who are.

This is natural and unconscious. What happens is that you get pulled this way and that and out of touch with your own true charisma.

When the teenage years come and there is sexual chemistry, money and mobility, relationships get very dramatic, both girl friends and boy friends. If your family is falling apart it is chaotic in all of your environments. No wonder people get gun shy, right?

Dr. Brit Brogaard in her ground breaking research reports that the reason the Bachelorette and Bachelor TV shows are so charged is because danger chemicals as well as sexual chemicals are released in the contrived risky romances on the show. Helicopter rides, bungee jumps and cliff climbing create a chemical cocktail that guarantees bonding.

“Take a date to the amusement park and go on the roller coaster together and you will create an instant connection” laughs Dr. Brit, “whether it is a lasting connection remains to be seen, but the power of the chemistry cannot be denied.”

The fact is that a part of you is way too obsessed with this appearance thing. Seriously, once you are together a few years, what he looks like is completely unimportant and you barely notice.

Don’t get me wrong. My husband is gorgeous. I was following him at the park yesterday and he looks fine from behind. Broad shoulders and a great butt. And we both enjoy each others appearance when we dress up for something. You might or might not find him attractive, but he is delicious to me.

In day to day life and certainly at night, appearance is highly over rated. The fact that you get upset when this topic comes up is ok. All it means is you are tracking down a limiting belief. You get annoyed at this topic because a part of you believes you can’t be happy unless you get your way when it comes to your man’s appearance.

Here’s where the two words come in. I bet you thought I forgot. The two words to add to any physical appearance affirmations are, drum roll please…. TO ME.

That’s it. Try these:

I want to be with a gorgeous man to me.

I want to be with a good looking man to me.

I want to be with a delicious man to me.

I want to be with a handsome man to me.

I want to be with the most attractive man I’ve ever been with.

I want to feel strong magnetism with my man.

I want to enjoy amazing sexual chemistry with my man.

These are powerful statements of belief. Girl, you are not, I repeat not going to have to marry a toad to have a happily ever after. I promise you. When you can release this grand daddy of limiting beliefs, you will radiate a light and peaceful vibe. When you see how people respond to you when you are unwound about this, you will be amazed.

When you start making affirmations that are coming out of a light, calm and heart centered energy, you will feel the difference. Relax and trust the natural unfolding of life. Allow yourself to suspend the doubt that you will be drawn to the perfect mate. Relax and trust the ease and flow that surrounds you.

a contrived “breakup” with Bentley, he only came on the show to cause problems, she was shaken to the core by how she fell for someone not interested in her.

I wonder if she went through the inner gauntlet of self doubt the rest of you do wondering what she did wrong. Did she ask herself what she did or said that turned him off?

Did she rake herself over the coals for being too affectionate, too open, too vulnerable? I know the Bachelor is a made up show…but her feelings are easily felt by the audience and isn’t that the point?

What I do know for sure is this. If you are forming your goals for love when you are “terrified of making a mistake that you will regret for the rest of your life,” you are not likely to find the right man.  Fear is never the best ground to plant seeds of new relationship.

I also know that my feelings will be hurt by life. I know that as much as I adore my husband, he will do and say things that hurt my feelings…simply because it reminds me of a painful past experience.  Like a flashback, even an innocent gesture can flip the switch in my body and panic, doubt and fear still wash over me.

What is different between me and Ashley is that I have learned that when the fear and panic comes, I see the link to past hurts, I take the steps to heal those ancient stories and I can survive fear when it appears.

At the very time you need to pick a practice that will distract and/or entertain you enough to snap out of it, cynicism rushes in and your self talk gets mean and petty. What are you going to do?

I know the stink of disappointment. Ha…Now that is a great typo!! I wanted to write sting. LOL Disappointment DOES stink. I hate it. No, I can’t say that is true. What is true is that I hate how I feel when it happens. The slump in energy feels awful and the doubts that come along just to make things interesting, feel even worse.

So what to do? Find an Attraction Buddy. Trust one person to be your go to person. Tell her that you are out of sorts and need a partner to help you shake the gloomies. Tell her you need about 15 minutes.

This is not about you bitching about your lonely life or her giving you advice. This is about recognizing when you are losing your grip on the commitment to the Law of Attraction principles you decided on.

Your Attraction Buddy is aware of your desire for a mate and is willing to be there for you when you need her to. Tell her up front what it is all about. Then, when you are out of sorts, you call and tell her. She then has the simple job of asking you why. You think about it and answer what comes up.

She asks you, “Why does that trouble you?” You answer with whatever comes up. She simply repeats this question until you get some sort of aha.

These ahas are not understood with the intellect. You will have a thought that is so novel, it will be a tangible aha. Try it.

It doesn’t rain very often in San Diego.

Winter is also not quite what I grew up with in the midwest.  That’s what makes rainy morning snuggling so exquisite.  Now I know that the special magic of those first few kisses and the electricity of those first expressions of intimacy are breath taking and intoxicating.

But I am here to tell you, when I scootch over and glue myself to my sleeping husband…the spooner to his spoonee, there is nothing better.  This morning I am extra grateful for my sweet heart and it is not just because he turned over and wrapped his arms around me for a precious 15 minutes before we got up.

Lar and I have been through our share of challenges in our short marriage.  Both of us have had some health and personal challenges.  We, like many baby boomers, are readjusting our vision and our dreams due to the new economy.

Yes, the first few weeks of our relationship were filled with stolen kisses and passionate embraces and other x-rated fun.  But when all is said and done, once our biology calmed itself and we settled into the delicious rhythm of our daily routine, the gentle unfolding of our relationship has brought deep satisfaction.

Don’t get me wrong, the strolls on the Italian Riviera, beach walks in Hawaii and cocktails on the fantail of a cruise ship are beyond fabulous.  I am deeply grateful for our good fortune and travel experiences.  However, the best part of my life with Lar is the day to day companionship.

I love how free I am to be myself.  I love how I feel when I am with him.  I love planning our days together.  I love how involved he is in his own interests.  I love when I am home alone and he is out and about.  I love when we are on the couch, fire lit, he with his paper, me writing this post.
